LILIYANE DANEEL MENDEL    [BA (Hon), BA.FA.III, Hon., HED, AISTD]

 

Liliyane was head of the SA Institute for Art & Architecture at the HSRC, Pretoria, South Africa  [1971-1979].  From 1990 till 2001 she was curator of the Boerneef Collection housed in the historic homestead Welgemeend, Gardens, Cape Town.  She taught art [drawing, painting & graphic design] as well as History of Art for many years.   2001-2010 was  a voluntary educational Guide at the South African National Gallery.

 

She has served on the committee of the SA Association of Arts Pretoria;  was member of the Launch Committee of the Friends of the Michaelis Collection, Cape Town;  was Chairperson  [2002-2011] of the Friends of Welgemeend and the Boerneef Collection.

 

Liliyane currently works full time in her studio in Z’fat, Israel. [made aliyah 2011]  She has had one-man exhibitions as well as taken part in group exhibitions in Gauteng, Western Cape, SA, Germany & USA.  Her works are in private collections in South Africa as well as in Germany,  UK,the USA and Israel.  One of her main subjects is portraiture – paintings as well as sculpture.  [Three informal portraits are in the collection of the Constitutional Court of SA].

 

Apart from freelance lecturing on History of Art,  she has also published articles as well as the following publications:  A Guide to Sources on Irma Stern,  Source Guide for Art and Architecture, 1971 & 1972.  Her poetry was published in Contrast 35.

 

She is listed in:  International Directory,  African Studies Association,  Brandeis University, Mass., USA;  A Directory of Southern African Contemporary Art Practices vol I, ii, iii;  The Collector’s Guide to Art and Artists in South Africa.

 

She has presented lectures to Union of Jewish Women, CT: ‘SA’s socio-political history through the eye of the artist: 1800-1994’ &  “Golden Apples in the Torah”;  “Loss of Hebrew Roots” at Limmud ’09 Conference;  “Still Life & the stories they tell” for Friends of Kloof Library;  “Loss of Hebrew Roots” Open Door, Stellenbosch;  Torah,   “Pri and the Influence of Greek Humanism”,  Albow Centre, Orthodox Hebrew Congregation, Cape Town; “Hidden Jewish Messages in Michaelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling, Limmud Conference,  Stellenbosch, 2011.  

 

She supported the Progressive Party lead by Helen Suzman [Jewish], the sole representative in parliament for over 30 years, the only constant voice of criticism against the Apartheid government.  She was also member of the Black Sash,  a non-violent white women’s resistance movement founded by a group of Jewish women.
